Gimenez’s home run leads St. Lucie over Tampa in 10 innings

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Andres Gimenez hit a three-run home run in the top of the 10th inning to help lead the St. Lucie Mets to a 6-2 win over the Tampa Tarpons on Monday.

The home run by Gimenez scored Dan Rizzie and Dale Burdick. Later in the inning, St. Lucie added insurance runs when Desmond Lindsay hit an RBI triple and then scored on a sacrifice fly by J.J. Franco.

In the bottom of the inning, Tampa scored on a sacrifice fly by Dom Thompson-Williams that brought home Brandon Wagner. However, the rally ended when Ezequiel Zabaleta got Kellin Deglan to fly out to end the game.

The Mets scored one run in the eighth before Tampa answered in the bottom of the inning when Mandy Alvarez hit a solo home run to tie the game 1-1.

Starters Justin Dunn and Nick Green turned in great performances for St. Lucie and Tampa, respectively. Dunn went seven scoreless innings, allowing two hits while striking out 10 and walking one. Green went six scoreless innings, allowing six hits while striking out four and walking three.

Zabaleta (1-0) got the win in relief while Trevor Lane (1-1) took the loss in the Florida State League game.


For the Tarpons, Alvarez homered and singled.

With the win, St. Lucie improved to 4-1 against Tampa this season.
